This evening while everyone in the family was occupied I decided it was time to spray the weed killer on the yard. Before I went outside, being the preacher I am, I thought about all the possible sermon illustrations that could come from from the process of weed killing. I thought about the parable of the sower and the weeds that came up and choked the good seed. I pondered the need to kill (mortify) all the sinful junk in our lives. I considered the parable of the tares and wheats (good grass/weeds) and how the tares will be burned. However, before the the experience was over the illustrations needed to change. The hose that had been sitting in the garage all winter contained numerous kinks so pressure was low and occassional at best. There was also a small leak in the hose and water was escaping at the nozzle and at the connection to the spray. In my attempt to open the valve on the spay the knob came loose and when I turned the water on I got shot in the face with pesticide. If you play with liquid poison you're gonna get sprayed! I suppose the moral of the story is that things are not always going to go as planned. God needed to teach me that I am not in control. So let's start again... All things work for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. Patience develops our perserverance. Only God knows the future. Tomorrow I suppose I will be doing whatever God wishes.
